After medical school, Dr. Shapiro completed his Pediatric Residency and Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

Dr. Shapiro's clinical and academic career focuses on optimizing the treatment response and outcomes for children with IBD. He is an internationally recognized leader in the field with over 50 peer-reviewed publications focused on better defining the natural history and immuno-microbial pathogenesis of IBD. Currently he serves as site principal investigator of two large multi-center pediatric studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (CAMEO) and Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (CAPTURE-IBD).

Dr. Shapiro has been an active member of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (CCF) since graduating fellowship in 2011 and is an elected member of the New England Chapter Medical Advisory Committee and National Scientific Advisory Committee. Given his years of service, he was recently named a Fellow of the CCF; an honor recognizing healthcare professionals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to the Foundation's mission through their volunteer efforts and commitment to Professional Membership.

While Dr. Shapiro is originally from Rhode Island, he will always consider Vermont his home. He remains close with his fellow UVM classmates and tries to return to Burlington with his wife and son at least once a year.
